Hyderabad: The annual program of distributing one crore of Bathukamma sarees in the state would start from Thursday. This year, sarees with 24 different designs in ten colors were purchased from the weavers by the Textile Department.
According to officials, 92 lakh sarees are said to be 6 meters and the remaining 8 lakh sarees are said to be 9 meters. These sarees will be 240 types of edged yarn and 100% polyester filament yarn.
The Telangana government has spent Rs 339.73 crore on Bathukamma sarees.
This initiative was launched by the state government in 2017 as a symbolic gift to women in the state.
The Textiles department, in coordination with all district collectors, has completed the arrangements for the distribution of sarees.
Minister of Textiles KT Rama Rao said that Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao had launched several schemes to support weavers who were distressed due to unemployment before 2014. This scheme provides one year employment for weavers. He demanded that the Center remove the GST on textiles as it placed a burden on weavers.
Every woman in the state who has a food security card will be given the Bathukamma saree. Nearly 5.81 crore of sarees have been distributed since the launch of the project till date, the minister said.
