Edinburgh mom starts hobby piñata business with fascinating designs

A mom from Edinburgh has created an impressive side business with bespoke piñatas for parties in the capital and the Lothians.

Papier Smache Piñata Services was started by Karen Whitehead, 48, who lives in West Edinburgh.

She started the business a few years ago during Halloween after making a pumpkin piñata on an experimental basis.

The reaction from friends and family made Karen think she was into something and so the business idea went from there.

She has so far created a range of SpongeBob SquarePants to Santa Claus stuffed piñatas among many, with piñatas filled for £ 35 for six to eight and unfilled for £ 25.

On making and selling piñatas, Karen said, “It all started on a Halloween when I made a pumpkin piñata as an experiment, the reception was amazing from friends and family. family and it’s kind of a spiral from there.

“I have no gift as a 2D artist, however, it seems to me that I can visualize things better in 3D and I think any shape is possible.

“They’re very personalized and I make them when I get orders. Normally the turnaround time is approximately four weeks from delivery. I charge £ 35 for a filled piñata for around 6-8 people or £ 25 unfilled.

“It’s really a hobby, I find the making of piñata very therapeutic. I work full time in Edinburgh and balance it out by setting aside time at night or on weekends.

“The most exciting and creative piñatas have been a Volkswagen camper van, teen titans Robin, Rainbow Dash, Pinkie Pie, SpongeBob, Peppa pig, Hello Kitty and the list goes on. People can find me on Facebook and Instagram. “
