LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – A month before Christmas, Lubbock’s mom, Jasmyne Hughes, was lucky enough to have her baby girl. The delivery was nothing short of a miracle, in the parking lot in front of her apartment.
“So throughout the pregnancy I’m like, hope to be there when my waters break.” I hope to be there. I hope that will not happen. I hope that doesn’t happen, âsaid Hughes.
Hughes had it all planned. With a due December 4th due, she felt her baby would arrive a week earlier, as would her first daughter Ja’Syiah. She hoped this delivery would be nothing like the first, a 7-hour labor in the hospital.
âI was really talking, but I guess God answered my prayers,â Hughes said.
Hughes woke up with contractions on Saturday morning. She went to the hospital, but was told it was not yet time and was sent home. About an hour later, at her apartment, her baby couldn’t wait any longer.
âAt that time, I didn’t even know. But I don’t know, something told me to check, so I checked and said oh no, his head is right here. So I called back, I was like mommy her head was coming, we have to go to the hospital, âHughes said.
She rushed outside to her mother’s car, but it was too late to drive her anywhere.
“And I said, has your water broken?” And as soon as I said that, she lost her waters. I was like agreeing. She was like mom, she was coming. We sit in the car. I look, of course, there is a head. I’m like oh my god we’re about to have a baby, right here, right now, âJasmyne’s mom Sabrina Hughes said.
One rainy morning in the front seat, baby girl Ja’Kyiah Washington was born.
âNo pain, no medicine, no doctor, just me, her and her grandmother,â Hughes said.
Lubbock firefighters arrived shortly after to cut the umbilical cord.
âI really enjoyed it like, I was happy that they were there to help me. And they weren’t worried, I guess they really couldn’t be because it’s their job to do it, but they had it under control. They cut it and it was like what after? said Hugues.
EMS took the happy family to the hospital.
âAs soon as I got to the hospital, I had to kiss her on the forehead. And I said, you are amazing and I’m so proud of you. You did a great job, âsaid Sabrina.
âI didn’t have any worries at all, I was like hey, it worked. It was easy. But I thought those contractions were oh my god. But the whole work part? I would do it again in the rain in the car, âsaid Hughes.
As for Granny Hughes, she will stick to her daily work.
âIt was a great experience. It’s one that I would rather not have to relive. But if I do, I kind of have an idea of ââwhat to expect,â said Sabrina.
