Platinum Card members can choose between two Art x Platinum designs or the classic Platinum design from January 20, 2022

NEW YORK– (BUSINESS WIRE) – American Express today unveiled two new platinum card designs for American consumers by two acclaimed artists, Julie Mehretu and Kehinde Wiley, who turned the platinum card into works of art . The two new Art x Platinum designs will be available to new and existing Platinum Card members from January 20, 2022, joining the classic Platinum design.

Platinum x Julie Mehretu

Julie Mehretu, one of today’s most renowned abstract artists, created the Platinum x Julie Mehretu, which evokes the abstract modernity for which she is known.

“For me, making art comes from expanding the imagination and the possibilities, the incredible feeling of inventiveness and vitality that one can experience with a painting,” said Julie Mehretu. “Art is all around us and I am delighted that some of my work can now be found on the smallest of canvases in the portfolios of Platinum Card members.

Mehretu is known for her talismanic and profound works that link architecture, identity and history while advancing concepts fundamental to the art itself.

Platinum x Kehinde Wiley

Designed by Kehinde Wiley, a visionary portrait painter best known for his naturalistic portraits, brought distinctive botanical elements to the Platinum Card design for Platinum x Kehinde Wiley, which beautifully captures the essence of his deep energy and worldview .

“It was an exciting project and a powerful experience for me to translate my artistic approach into one of the reimagined designs of the Platinum Card,” said Kehinde Wiley. “I am proud to help Platinum Card members enjoy a little artistic inspiration every day.”

Wiley’s work engages signs and visual rhetoric of the heroic, the mighty, the majestic, and the sublime in its portrayal of diverse individuals.

Early in their careers, Mehretu and Wiley participated in the prestigious Artist-in-Residence program at the Studio Museum in Harlem. American Express recently pledged $ 1 million in sponsorship of the museum’s work as one of the largest incubators for artistic genius today.

US Consumer Platinum Card members will be able to order one of two new Art x Platinum designs from January 20, 2022.

This announcement follows the recent update to the US Consumer Platinum Card, which offers cardholders new benefits and lifestyle experiences.
